The Visionary Behind the Mic

Today, Dr J. Mahendran is not just a Station Director, he is a teacher, a mentor, a visionary, and above all, a believer in people. His story is a reminder that one person’s dedication can transform a simple idea into a social movement. Through Rathinavani, he has shown that a microphone, when guided by purpose, can echo far beyond sound; it can echo change, empowerment, and hope.

The Visionary Behind the Mic

In the heart of Coimbatore, where tradition meets technology, one man dared to dream that the power of voice could change lives. Dr. J. Mahendran, the Station Director of Rathinavani Community Radio 90.8 FM. His journey is not just about building a radio station; it is about building bridges between people, communities, and generations. He was born in Sivagiri, Tenkasi district. Dr J. Mahendran was drawn to the microphone at a young age. For him, radio was never just about music or announcements; it was about connection, empowerment, and service. His belief became the foundation of his 2 years in the media industry. He began his career at Kodaikanal All India Radio (Kodai FM 100.5) as a presenter, where his clear, captivating voice soon became familiar to countless listeners. He went on to serve for 15 years at Tirunelveli Hello FM 106.4 as a program producer and presenter, honing his craft and shaping a deep understanding of what radio truly means to people. Later, he expanded his horizon with Magizhchi Online Radio, using digital platforms to connect with global Tamil audiences.

With this rich experience behind him, Dr. Mahendran took charge as the Station Director of Rathinavani Community Radio 90.8 FM in Coimbatore, transforming a small campus-based initiative into a vibrant platform for education, awareness, and community empowerment. Guided by his simple yet profound belief that “Media is not merely for entertainment, it is a tool for empowerment,” he built Rathinavani into a voice for the voiceless. His leadership style has always been visionary and empathetic, mentoring students not just to broadcast, but to become storytellers, change-makers, and responsible citizens. Under his direction, Rathinavani grew into more than just a radio station

It became the heartbeat of the community, with programs on education, women’s empowerment, health, environment, and culture. Dr Mahendran ensured that the mic was not reserved for professionals alone; farmers, women, children, and NGOs all found their space on air. This inclusive approach made the content authentic, participatory, and meaningful.Innovation has also been his trademark. While many saw radio as a fading medium, Dr. J. Mahendran embraced digital technology, introducing online streaming, podcasts, and global listenership. Through this, he proved that community stories from Coimbatore could resonate across the world.

Perhaps the most marvellous part of his journey lies in the human impact. During floods, during the pandemic, and in times of social distress, Rathinavani became a lifeline, providing accurate information, hope, and solidarity. Awards and recognitions soon followed, including the Star Icon Award 2024, but to him, the true reward is watching a villager’s confidence bloom when their voice is broadcast or a student discovering their potential through radio.
