This programme aims to improve the skills of teachers by offering faculty training, updated curriculum and emphasis on practical training to students by providing access to specialized infrastructure and consumables.

It paves a way for the improvement of basic sciences and for facing the new challenges in the field of modern Biology among the young minds thereby improving the quality of education in the institution augmented by upgraded and modern equipment’s and to procure other essentials to enhance the practical skills.

DBT – Star College Scheme at Rathinam College of Arts and Science

Our college has been selected under the DBT -STAR College Scheme “Strengthening of Support” category by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India has sanctioned “Star College Scheme” in November 2023 for five undergraduate science departments viz., Biotechnology, Microbiology, Computer Science, Physics, and Maths. These departments of the STAR college programme have been executing the scheme excellently, focusing on their goals and objectives at all levels. Under this Scheme, the College aims to strengthen the academic and physical infrastructure for achieving excellence in teaching and training, stimulate original thinking through ‘hands-on’ exposure to experimental work and participation in summer schools, promote networking and strengthen ties with neighbouring institutions and other laboratories, provide access and exposure to students to research laboratories and industries and conduct specialized training programmes for faculty improvement for optimizing technical capabilities.

OBJECTIVES

  • To enhance the current practical courses.
  • To upgrade laboratory infrastructure by providing multiple pieces of equipment for various experiments.
  • To provide students with knowledge through interdisciplinary learning, hands-on training, and summer internships.
  • To offer students exposure to both basic and advanced research in their fields, with organized institutional visits to help them choose their future academic path.
  • To conduct faculty development programs to update knowledge on the latest developments in their research areas.
  • To expand centralized instrumentation facilities and encourage interdisciplinary activities among students and faculty.
  • To facilitate group projects among students from different science departments and recognize their research addressing societal issues.
  • To visit prestigious research laboratories and industries to understand the practical applications of science and ongoing research in emerging fields.
  • To strengthen curricula and practical courses by developing e-contents, laboratory manuals, and SOPs for specific instruments and experiments.
